SUBJECT: Using a "Governor" to prevent HVAC damage

Now that its heating up everywhere, last week we talked about how using simply thermostats will save you energy over the more sophisticated "set-back" type programmable thermostats.

This week - let's take it a step further and look at how to prevent guests from damaging Air conditioners. Even the most well meaning guests may mistreat your heating - air conditioning system. So here is a trick to make sure they don't freeze your AC or over use the heating.

To start with, we recommend using very simple thermostats because Guests frequently are unable to use programmable thermostats correctly.

But even with an easy-to-use thermostat, guests will frequently jack the thermostat down to 50 degrees even if its only a few degrees too warm. This can cause your AC to freeze up and damage the system. At a minimum it causes the AC not to work for a few hours in which time your guest will be steaming - even if its their fault.

To prohibit such problems, your local HVAC contractor can install what I call a "Governor" (they may call it something else) that allows you to set a maximum heat and minimum cooling. It is not visible to the guests and still allows them to adjust the HVAC within a range of say 68 degrees cooling to 72 degrees heating.

The Guest can still adjust the thermostat as they see fit, but if they set it too high or too low the governor prohibits the system from going too far.

The governor consists of several parts and will take a good installer just an hour to put in. Not only does it forestall potential repairs it will also save money on repairs.
